I use a Racor filter/seperator. It has a clear bowl on the bottom that can be drained if you get some water in it.

Re: Water Separator Suggestion Please

My boat (1989) came with type model filter bracket installed. At this point, if I had to replace it with a new setup I would definately go with the Racor, more expensive but at least you can see how much water and crud you have in the filter and have the ability to drain it. Just make sure you install the unit where it is easily asscessable. The person who installed mine stuck it is an aft access hole (9X16) without the engine installed, standing behind transom on the ground. You almost have to be triple jointed to change out the filter and have to use the short model because of lack of room under it. So stop and think about what you are doing first.

In the early part of this year, Trailer Boats magazine tested a series of different spin on water-separators. See if you can find a back issue and read their suggestions and results.

if for some reason down the line you are not happy with the tempo filter setup, racor make a filter that will spin straight onto your tempo head. racor really is the better choice.

I am with ya BenC. the tempo stuff is mostly junk but the new stainless filter head and the correct Racor filter is nice
