Ok by now every one who?s read some of my posts understands that although I am a competent mechanic, I am a bit new to stern drive engines.
I saw the exhaust water stopers in the y pipe on my boat and from what i saw, the two sided hang together flat against each other, in the center of the pipe, I thought that if water tried to enter the exhaust they would float and seal the exhaust tube shut. then i noticed that one was only one half, so i decided that i need to buy one set.
I installed the new set yesterday eventually, and it just sits in place blocking off the y pipe, and i guess when exhaust pressure presses against it, it would open and allow it to pass through. However standing in place to block off any water that comes the other way if there is no exhaust pressure to overcome it.
Have i got the workings of the water shutter right the second time :redface: this meaning that i would need to buy another 3 sets :(
Now that i have the one out it also loks a bit heavy to float also. :eek:

let me know
thanks
No Fuss :D

Re: water shutters

Do you have the new style shutters that are made of silicon rubber/plastic?
They will close up & stop water. The exhaust will open them when it comes. Don't fret, put them in. They can save your motor.

ok my shutters are made of what looks like hard plastic with rubber at the center. what concerns me is if when they are installed they should be hanging free in the center of the pipe or if they should be holding themselves against the walls of the pipe like if blocking it off until there is something from above to open them

Re: water shutters

If they are hanging straight down, you don't have them installed properly, and they are binding which will hold them open.

Re: water shutters

ok i take that to mean that they are not supposed to hang down. its the old ones, the ones i met in the exhaust that are hanging down. they are just hanging free. if u push them up to either side they will go and when u let them go they just fall straight down.
I will order 3 new ones on monday, thanks

No fuss :)
