So, I've got a 2001 Johnson 9.9, model J10RVLSIC, that is being contrary. Sometimes it'll put water out the tell-tale, and sometimes not. More specifically, I get no water out the tell-tale when the motor is in the water, but I do when on the muffs. Water pressure on the muffs is just a trickle, to make sure the hose isn't overcoming the water pump.

Is this an indicator of a weak impeller?

Side question - is the tell-tale before or after the thermostat?

You need a new impeller, that's why it works on muffs. And turn up the water, you run the risk of overheating the motor and you aren't overwhelming the pump .

I don't know about the thermostat/tell-tale relationship.

Factory manual will show you water routing, as will this page: www.boatinfo.no

All of the Johnnys that I know have the thermostats AFTER the telltale. So if you are flowing water out of the telltale all it tells you is that the waterpump is functioning, not that the thermostat is opening up. I see so many guys pulling their thermostats out to check em, but really all you need to do is invest in a $20 infrared thermometer and just point it at the head and make sure it is cooling properly.

www.boatinfo.no is an excellent resource - thanks to you both for a very concise answer to my latest question!
