Water temp gauge not registering anything...

I have a '91 Yamaha YEMS 4.3L V6 Sterndrive. I have recently noticed that my water temp gauge isn't working. I'm not sure if it is the gauge or the sensor itself. How do I test the gauge? Also, I'm not exactly sure where on the engine the sensor it/what it looks like. Thanks.

Disconnect the wire at the sender on the engine, with the ign. sw. in the run position ground the wire. If the gauge pegs to full hot, replace the sender.

If it doesn't peg to full hot,ground the s terminal on the back of the gauge.If it doesn't peg,and you have battery + and - to the gauge.replace the gauge.

Ok, so the gauge tests out ok and the sender appears to be faulty. I've looked here on iboats and done some searches, but I can't find the water temp sender for Yamaha. Anyone be able to help out? Are senders fairly interchangable? Again, it's a 4.3L V6 YEMS.

I just took mine off and took it up to autozone and they matche dit up pretty easily.

You might try nausetmarine.com.Click on parts,then click on Yamaha.Select sterndrive,and you can at least get a part number.Nauset may have it,or possibly cross the number over to Sierra or something.Those Yamaha sterndrive parts are getting hard to find.

Also a good chance the same year Mercruiser part will work,as it probably comes direct from GM with the engine.

To be honest I had a similar problem and ended having to replace sender and gauge as a package. I bought 3 sendeers that should have worked...not......So I had ta replace the whole assembly
