Hi,just wondering where the water temp sensor mounts on a 1983 115hp inline mariner. There is a usual looking removable fitting in the middle of the cylinder head!!!! Strange place to have it but is that where?????

Re: Water temp guage

Take that guage back as the inline has no t-stat so it runs cool anyway. I doubt the needle will move much off the cold mark, better to install a 0-15 psi water pressure guage. If you still want to use the kit you have most are a surface/contact reading sender so it will mount in the "U" shaped cutout next to #1 plug as this will read directly off cylinder jugg....

What would the removable brass plug in the middle of the head be for then,if not for a water temp guage?? Maybe a water pressure guage?? So what your saying is the water running through the head never really gets hot.If i did use the guage to read water head temp,if the water pump stopped working wouldnt the guage read a higher temp due to temp rising in head, water or air temp???

Due to the desing of the cooling on an inline........ it's cool or not. Forget the temperature since if the water pump fails the motor will overheat in under a minute or two. You would have to watch the gauge constantly and it is not practical.

I have always run a water pressure gauge on my inlines...... I had it save my butt once since I noticed a lower pressure then normal and returned to dock...... when I got home the impellar failed. The gauge will always tell you the pressure in-case you ever get a blockage on the water intakes.

No water pressure = high temperature

This was originally the outlet for water indicator, the later models move it to top of block but used the old design water jacket. Cheaper than retooling...

No water pressure = high temperature

Regardless of the type of guage, it still has to be monitored or it is of no use. There are situations where a temp gauge is better than a pressure gauge. As an example, if the motor encounters a lean run condition it could run hot even though the water pressure remains normal. To cover all bases, both gauges can be beneficial.
