Water Temperature gauge

I put a new Temperature Sender on the AQ130 engine and hooked up the wire hanging off the hold one and the Temp gauge went to 240 degrees hot again.

Disconnected and it went down to Zero, hook it up and back to hot...

Please advise soon. Only thing keeping me from putting it in the water and can I wire a new gauge to it for testing... thier not cheap.... LOL
