Folks,

I have an 82 Johnson 140 Model # J140TXCNB(D) can't make out the last letter.

I have a Clymer Shop manual.

The motor has been sitting for some time during my rebuild, I can see in the manual where the water tube connects at the impeller. I haven't taken anything apart yet. What I can't seem to find in the manual is where the tube connects at the top of the shaft.

Last time I had the motor running and shut it down there seemed to be water comming from "everywhere" meaning above the intake and it looked like near the top of the shaft.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Re: Water tube at the head

Ed,

I have an 83 50hp and am wondering the same thing. I installed my lower unit wrong and pushed that tube to the side and now it is very loose and wiggles easily. I am worried if I busted a weld or a seal or ???
I don't know if this is normal or not. Does your's do that?

I am very interested in others reply's, so I'll help you keep this one at the top.
I also posted a similar message at another bulletin board. I'll let you know if there are any answers there.

Good luck,
Jason

Re: Water tube at the head

USS Neversail,

I haven't taken the lower unit off yet. So I don't know if the tube wriggles. I did have the impeller serviced by a "professional" mechanic who is now out of business 1 year before I went into "drydock". I don't want to start taking things apart before I am sure what I am looking for.

Any help from the "Mentors of Motors" is greatly appreciated.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Ed, you don't want to remove the water tube bc it's a b***h to replace. It's firmly attached at the top, but can move around and the bottom fits into a rubber grommet which sits inside an adapter on top of the pump body. It's just a slip fit and usually comes out easily. When rebuilding the pump, it's a good idea to put some gasket cement on the outside of the grommet to keep it from moving during reassembly. It's also useful to clean up the OD of the water tube w/ fine sandpaper and smear some grase on it to make sure it doesn't hang up when assembling the LU back to the leg.
Joe Reeves can give you more detail on how the tube top is retained, but I know you don't want to remove it w/o a very good reason.

Wildeone,

"Firmly attached at the top", is it bolted to the head? Any additional info on how it is attached would be usefull.

Is there a way to inspect it for cracks, etc. without turning the entire motor into a pile of pieces?

Once again, thanks for all the help.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Sorry for the double post.

One more thing, what is "normal" for water drainage after the motor is shut down?

In other words, where should I see water draining from?

Thanks again.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Ed - I have two 1988 OMC V4s (plus a bunch of others over the years). When you shut them down water seems to drain from everywhere. That is perfectly normal.

Re: Water tube at the head

Ed, I agree with the previous posting, water drains out from a lot of places. I haven't had any draining from that high up, though.

Also, don't know if this helps, but I found out that the tube is supposed to be a little free moving. I don't know if this means there is a seal at the top of that tube or if it is bolted or welded in place. It leads me to believe that there is a seal or a grommet of some sort.
That is just my poor little uneducated, unexperienced, and generally ignorant comment. Hope it helps if you get anymore information from one of the experts on this board.
At least this posting will put your question back to the top.

Good luck.

Jason

ed. these tubes are not bolted in that i know about, just rubber grommets top and bottom ,& i agree with wildeone dont mess with the one at the top to much when changing the impeller ,the tube does "wiggle" a little.

Re: Water tube at the head

I am experiencing the same questions with a '76, 40 hp evinrude. The tube (It is a two piece assy) came out from up inside the head when I removed the lu. It didn't look right so I ordered a new one. The old tube looks broken off and the new tube is 1/2" longer and won't fit in the hole I assume is made for it. It looks like there is a piece of the old tube still up in that cavity in the head. If this is all true, It looks like I have to pull the head to change the tube. any one seen this before? Best not to wiggle the tube or force the lu back into place
