I'm going to pull my gearcase to replace the seals, but don't want to disturb the water tube. The previous owner abused that tube pretty bad and the last time I got it to go back into place and seal in the pump housing I dreaded the day I had to drop the LU again. That day is here. The manual doesn't seem to have the info I need on it. I did a search on the water tube and just found lots of people who needed a new grommet and needed to pull the powerhead to get to it, but my grommet is fine. I just want to put a new water tube in there.

Question is: do I need to pull the powerhead to pull out the water tube, or do you just pull and it slides out of the grommet? My grommet is fine and the motor is cooling perfectly, no seal problems. I just want to put a new tube in there. So does it slide in from the top with the powerhead removed, along with the grommet, or can it just be pulled out the bottom with the gearcase on and a new one pushed into place?

thanks!

The parts diagram I'm looking at:

The tube will / should stay in the midsection when you drop the gearcase. If it comes out then the lip on the top must be gone or in bad shape. Yes, to replace the tube correctly you will have to pull the exhaust tube out of the midsection which means you are correct, the powerhead will come off.

Thanks!

It does stay in there; to clarify, it's the bottom part of the tube that's all trashed and bent. I had hoped to just pull it out and stick a new one in. It could be worse I guess.

How about cutting off the damaged lower section and replacing it? This would save you having to remove the power head.

That's what I thought last time, but it would be a risky thing to shove a dremel up there and hope for the right cut and the right seal. If that housing can come off painlessly then it would be a reasonable thing to get another water tube, cut it exactly to length, and solder/JB weld it to the original tube with a coupler. Does that midsection housing come off cleanly? Wish I had it in front of me right now.

Unfortunately the mid removal and accessing the tube in question is a monumental task. It will be a lot easier to cut it off and join it using copper tubing.
Here is a picture of a 140 v4 mid with the power head off, you still need to then remove the "adapter" plate with is another PIA assuming you have little corrosion.
My pickup tube is a little bent, as shown I clean it up with a rat tail file and and make a field decision at that time when I am ready for assembly.
