Hey y'all, question, have a 75 Johnson 25 HP, long shaft ,doing conversion to Short shaft, can the water tube be cut to fit or has to be replaced? If it has to be replaced, does the power head need to be removed? Also 68 evinrude 18 HP carburetor slow speed needle is loose even after rebuilding,it will vibrate and move when idling, packing washers replaced, but still not tight as it should be,got me stumped

i have used 5 min epoxy on the threads of the screws to tighten them up , not saying its a proper way to fix because if you are not at the correct setting you cant / shouldn't adjust once the epoxy has set.
it will tighten the threads to stop the screw backing out.

best permanent fix is a brass sleeve set into the hole and a new tread tapped.

Install 3/ 4 packing washers.----Tighten the packing follower to jam the packing on the needle.----Simple in my opinion.

On most outboards, the engines have to come off to allow access.

Maybe the carb should be put out to pasture....there's lots around and fairly cheap.

On this 1975 model 25 HP it is a simple 10 minute job to shorten / re-instal the water tube.----Powerhead does not have to come off !!!

I was referring to the removal of the water tube which I believe the poster asked.

Of coarse I could be wrong.

???-----There is a simple grommet halfway up the exhaust housing.----You slide the water tube out.----Cut off 5 "-----Slide the water tube back in.-----Elegantly simple.

Good to know.

But, what if there is a hole in the tube above that point?

#9 in the attached diagram is the watertube which has to be shortened. Perhaps you can post a diagram showing the showing the "tube above that point" to which you refer.

Vic,

Wasn't being smart and I'm not the original poster.

But to clarify, original post said does the Engine have to come off, and I said in general outboard engines have to come off....bla bla bla.

As far as above this one particular model the area above the tube is also classified as a tube. The exhaust expansion area is a tube and the place above the gaskets have tubes to channel water through out the block and the remainder ning orifices.

Terminology can be different but at the end of the day it all means the same. Most of these posters are NOT marine mechanics and talking in a language they can understand often helps these folks.

I gave Racerone his justice....nice to know a tube pulls off half way up but most do not have that so it is what it is.

This day and age with everyone expected to do so much it might just be better to give them the answer so they can go help out their daughter or other family issues.

Not everyone wants to be a marine mechanic, but lots of them are interested in old stuff and have excellent mechanical skills.

Maybe I'm all wrong and it may be best to just drop out as a advice giving pro.

Matt
