Hello all, a newbie question here, but hey, this is my first boat and I am definitely not an expert!

If you look at the picture below (sorry for it being a bit blurry, I didn't take it and haven't had a chance to take a new one) it will explain it. I know where the "pee" hole is, but I don't know where the majority of the water that goes into the engine is SUPPOSED to come out. It is a 1989 Evinrude 140 V4.

Any one know?

Thanks!

Re: Water

Thanks for the response Bob.
Another newbie question, will it be a lot of water?
I am trying to determine if my water pump is functioning properly. The first time I started it water came out of the "pee" hole. The last time I started it, nothing came out of the pee hole and I didn't know where else the water would come from...

many times mud wasps will make a nest in the tube..

you could run a wire up the tube to try and clean it out...

touch the heads with your hands to try and determine if the heads are getting too hot...

at idle you should be able to hold your hand on the head for several seconds or more.

my 115 idles at about 120 degrees...I can hold my hand on the head for an hour!! at that temp...

if you run your motor at home in the yard on muffs, you would see the water coming out of the prop...

you want to make sure your motor is cooling...do what ever it takes to make sure of that... touch the heads, get a thermometer to check the heads...get a temp gauge for the boat, get a water pressure gauge...and or all.

good luck

Re: Water

Looks like a 1983 140 crossflow in your picture.

They have the telltale water line coming out of the bottom of the exhaust cover at a 90 degree angle through a 1/8 NPT fitting. At that angle and size, they get clogged very easily.

Re: Water

Thanks Bob and Ezeke!

What is the easiest way to check which motor I have Ezeke? I assumed it was a 1989 as it was on the 1989 boat, thought they were together as such when bought...

Re: Water

After looking at some pictures, yes, I believe it is the 1983 and not a 1989. Anyone care to state their opinion on this motor? Good? Bad?

Good motor if it's in good shape. Shape of the hood gave me doubts about it's year when I saw it but I see ezeke straightened that out earlier in the thread.

Re: Water

Thanks, it seems to be in pretty good shape. Might have a water pump/thermostat issue, but it starts and runs thus far...

Yes, ezeke got me straightened out on the year.
