I just read your Testing Tachometer With Water Cooled Regulator/Rectifier, by Joe Reeves.I have a 1989 1.6 OMC SeaDrive. My Teleflex tach was giving me bad readings at all speeds.I tried a brand new tach with the same results.
The engine came with a 583268 REG/RECT installed on it,which I believe is a 35amp water cooled.I replaced it with a 0585195 3/10amp one which the dealer said was a suitable replacement at a lower price.
I installed it and tested it before starting the engine-which tested out ok.When I hooked up the gray tach wire it didn't work at all.The Teleflex troubleshooting site if it doesn't work properly hooked up to the gray wire.Try hooking it up to the yellow/gray wire which i did.It works just fine now.My question is are there exceptions to your test regarding faulty REG/RECT because of the tach working off the yellow/gray wire and not the gray wire? Thanks
