See page 21 of the owners manual in the link below and use lots of WD40 that did not exist in 1957. FYI, I could only find a Johnson manual but it is the same motor as your Evinrude, just a different color. BTDT, good luck!

I am guessing here about your "waterlogged" discription. Do you mean submerged? If so fresh or salt water? Saltwater = yes about everything.

Hi smut. The first thing to do is remove the spark plugs and turn the motor over several times to expel any water in the cylinders. You'll then want to spray LOTS of lube into the cylinders themselves and continue turning the motor over. I would use something like Deep Creep and/or Sea Foam. I would then remove the flywheel and replace the ignition components. Coils and a tune up kit are only about $20 each right here at iboats. I would also replace the spark plug wires while you're at it with some fresh 7mm copper core wires cut to length. The next step will be to rebuild the carburetor, also about $20 here at iboats. That's really about it. If that doesn't do it, then you'll probably have to do some major surgery. Here's a handy link that can help with the job.

Dry out the ignition, (mag plate in an oven on low or in the sun), flush the carb and lines thoroughally with fresh fuel, then get that thing running. The longer it sits, the worse it is. The quicker you get it running the better. Run it for a good hour after idling for some time.

When you get it running squirt some fogging oil through the the throat of the carb at different times.

Seeing it's in fresh water, get it running as soon as you can and you should have no probs. If it was in salt water, that's a different story. I've done a lot of fresh water ones and never lost one yet.
