waterproof console?

Hi, I'm sure many of you on here have re-built your console, and I was wondering if you tried to make it "waterproof", or just installed gauges on the console material without trying to cover them? I am a way off of redoing my console, but I am trying to have a plan in mind before I begin. I only run in local rivers and lakes, and don't leave it in the water overnight (enless I'm camping) but am not sure if I would have to worry about covering the gauges and switches from water spray/rain. My plan is to make the console out of fiberglass and just insert the gauges and switches on that and be done with it? Or should I do it differently?

I tried searching and can't really find much info.

Re: waterproof console?

Gauges are waterproof, switches should be waterproof or have silicone boots. The console can be fiberglass or 'glas-covered plywood. If you use plywood make sure it's mounted above the bilge to eliminate water wicking from the bottom.

Here's a shot of my 14' Jon. So far 6 years with the plywood/'glass console and no issues. I keep it tarped when not in use, but I'm not super-finicky about keeping it bone-dry.

Re: waterproof console?

you should seal the hole for the guages; silicon is fine. I used a little liquid electric tape since it's black on some of mine.

A concole cover (even a grill cover) is all you need.
