Hey Gang

Tried the hand on motor trick, nearly burned my hand off. (***** waste) :)

This is Dad's motor and he lives out of state. I try to visit often as he has been sick. When there my brother and I help him. So far not too successful. So any help is appreciated.

The motor is a 1968 40 hp Johnson. Dad tells me he put water in all 3 passages at the head. These would be the one from the pump, the one to pump, and the one that mixes with the exhaust (I believe) He says water comes out down south from all 3 passages.

Further, when turning motor by hand, the water pump makes a "whooshing" sound. Makes us believe it is installed correctly with woodruff key in place. When motor is turned over, water does NOT come up through the appropriate passage, nor one that is inappropriate either. :)

Based on all this, can you make anything of this?

Thank you
Billy Bob

Re: Waterpump problem??

Buy a water pump kit from a dealer and replace the pump first. You did not give any indication of when the last time it was changed and the normal rate is at least every 2-3 seasons depending on what type of water it has been run in. Some muddy water "eats" the pumps in a season.

Bob

If you do replace the impeller be sure to put a light coat of grease on the impeller housing.

If your pump housing has a flat plate below it check it is not upside down. The outlet and the hole in the lower plate should not overlap. Else no pressure
Regards
