Re: waterpump repair

Volvo didn't use Sherwood pumps, and none with a keyway. All had splines.
You obviously have an aftermarket pump of some kind on there.

Re: waterpump repair

Like I said, Volvo doesn't use keyways and keys in any of their OEM pumps. Either in the MD model you have or the HU (1995) model at shorts marine (where ever that is).
Here are the Volvo manuals for your engine manuals.
Electrical & Ignition, PN 7796456
Engine (Includes cooling system) PN 7796485
Fuel System, PN 7796457

Re: waterpump repair

thanks don for the numbers for the manuals. i just got this boat early this year. still working all the bugs out of her. i hate when people shadetree these things. one thing to get off the water and another to say you fixed it . they had run hot wire from switch to fuel pump on this thing just because relay was bad. replaced that real fast as it was hot when key was on.

Re: waterpump repair

Just an FYI..(of course were going back a ways) My 77 Bayliner Saratoga AQ255a (280) had a Sherwood 12 fin keyway raw pump on it. But as I'm not the original owner, it could have been changed. Newer stuff (from me) now is a Jabsco with 12 splines, but thay look exactly the same. Jabsco 18830-00xx, and Sherwood G-20.

Re: waterpump repair

Two totally different types of pumps here Robby, his is a belt driven pump while yours was crankshaft driven. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Ref: 1977 Bayliner Saratoga AQ255a
Don...no, mines a belt too, raw in the bottom, then out the top, and next to the alternator (damn engineers...pump leaks, salt goes all over the alt). And I just looked at the box on my last pump, and it was a Jabsco 18830-0000/Sherwood G-30, not a G-20. Let me go back and tell the whole story, as it might be of help to someone. And a big "agreed" on the shadetree...I do it regularly working on older stuff, but pictures, numbers, and an explanation why go with the boat. But this is more of a Sherwood/Jabsco thing. Now.... bear with me all. Boat bought from neighbor (he bought new), and he does not ever remember replacing the pump, just the impeller. It was a Sherwood with a 12 fin/keyway Impeller #18838-0001 (old Aqua Power #1231). I bought a similar pump off ebay a ways back, and it was the same, only Jabsco, and the impeller fins were thinner and no key (12 splines #18-3081). Put that one on last year after the Sherwood let go, but the pulley that came with it was not 6, but 6 1/2. So it was a Jabsco #18830-00 10 . So, new belt, and made it through the summer. Ebay another (new-West Marine), and although it showed it as a 18830-0000, it also was a -0010, which is a a fixed 6 1/2 pulley. The -0000 is a hub mounted 6 inch pulley, like my original. So I anted up and bought ANOTHER pump (I'll put a 6 on that other pump in time for a spare), a for sure Sherwood G-30 replacement (Jabsco 18830-0000) off an ebay dealer. Anyone who knows me will tell you am great at spending 3 bucks to save a dollar. And this too is a 12 spline impeller (18838-0001). Now looking at the Sierra Cat, the impeller shown(for replacement 18838-0001 12 fin/keyway) does NOT look wide enough. And I searched and can find only one 12 spline shaft on Sierra's impellers for these pumps.. Long story short, West Marine sells impellers. And if yours is the Jabsco, #18838-0001, 12 fin, keyway, I have 1 new, 1 with a few hours on it, I can let go cheap..email me at Hogrider@Myway.com if you can use them. Also, if we shot a few more engineers, life would get a whole lot easier for mechanics. Time to go electric on this stuff anyway... :D

Re: waterpump repair

mine is sherwood pump found that on casting but can not find numbers nowhere on it. pump impeller is still in good shape but was going to repair in off season. may have to take pump off and take to dealer somewhere. sweet running motor but still fighting electrical problem on ignition also. always starts great cold only to quit when driven 30 minutes or so. i have done alot of the things i have read on this post. new coil, pickup, module, total tuneup. lost power to dis till i replaced all the above. check valve is clean and free, tank is clean, all fuel lines checked, now waiting for warm weather to try it out. lots of good help on this forum for people like me. thanks for all the post.

Re: waterpump repair

Lazydays, someone (Previous owner??) installed an aftermarket pump. Like I said, Volvo didn't use Sherwood pumps on your model. So trying to find an impeller using a Volvo number to cross reference it isn't going to work. You will have to find a place that carries Sherwood pumps and have them get you the proper impeller.

Robby, it doesn't matter what you have. The pump he has is competely different from yours. His pump style started in 93 with the Volvo/OMC joint venture. I know the type you have, see them all the time, but they are a COMPLETELY different type and style pump. Looks completely different.
They were only used for 5 years and then Volvo went back to the crankshaft mounted pumps.

Re: waterpump repair

Don, yes, I realize that (and know of the pump were talking here..just trying to spread a little info, and thanks for your insight), and Lazydays, when you do find out the right impeller and numbers, repost it here for our info, and PLEASE make sure that number stays somewhere in the boat for the next owner! And good luck in getting to 31 minutes and beyond...been there, done that!
