I always thought wave height is from the still water line to the crest?

Nope. That is a common misconception. Wave height is the total distance from the bottom of the trough between waves, to the top of the wave.

It does seem to exagerate the size of waves, but think of it this way; when you hear waves are 50,000 feet high, think thats its really only 25,000 feet above mean water level. Makes it seem not as imposing, doesn't it?

Ya, I guess so, if you are in a 500,000' boat. :D If you are in a 40 footer, better hold on and grab the oxygen tank for the ride up. :D
