waves that look like nessie

When we go boating, I notice a strange looking wave that is so tall it looks like Nessie. I always steer clear of them because they are so tall. I think they occur when two intersecting sets of waves cross.

Well, last Friday, I had a close encounter with a set of those waves that ended with six inches of water on my deck. We were pulling a tube, and the rider fell off. I swung around and did a loop so the rider could get on the tube. When I let off the throttle, the bow dipped down as it de-accelerated. Just then I saw one of those Nessie waves right in front of us. The first wave splashed over the bow and over the head of my 32 year-old daughter. The second wave, even larger, came over the windscreen! It soaked my wife and me really good.

I immediately turned on the bilge and looked in the doghouse. No water there. So we started bailing with the grandsons' beach buckets. The deck carpet was getting in the way, so I opened the center storage compartment and let the water fill in there. Then it became really easy to bail out of the compartment. The engine compartment never did fill up with water. I could see a small stream of water coming in, but not nearly as much as I thought there would be.

It took about fifteen minutes to get rid of all the water. We were a little spooked by the happening. I was glad the grandsons were not up front with their mother.

This whole affair gave me a new found respect for the power of waves and water in general. Fortunately we have a Seaswirl sport boat that is not supposed to sink, but you never know! I'm just glad we had the beach buckets! They stay in the boat from now on.
