I am servicing my motor for the season, starting 1st of april. When i put it away i sprayed everything under hood with WD40. Starter, carbs, pwhd, wiring harness etc.

I leave it on boat all summer in the water.

Is it a good idea to spray it with wd 40 now and then against the corrosive environment ? Or is there anything better. Does i harm anything. My motor looks brand new under hood now !

Re: WD 40 and corrosion ?

Hi Gdane

No....it doesn't harm it (keep it off of the plug wires if possible)
Yes...its a good idea
yes...there are better choices (stuff with less solvent) but its adequate...

WD-40 is nothing more than an petroleum product with a high percentage of evaporative solvent. What that means is, alot of that nice shiny residue will evaporate off shortly, so put it on heavy.

my .01 worth
good luck! :)

Re: WD 40 and corrosion ?

I like a product that Mercury puts out called Corrosion Guard. It sprays on, then in a few hours dries to a wax-like consistency. It is excellent at protecting against rust, and lasts a long time. It has a slightly opaque finish, so it's not as pretty as that shiny WD-40 but it's a lot better at protecting your investment.
