For those of you seeking help on trouble shooting engine problems there is one vital piece of information that is needed to accurately assist you.

The engine serial number if it is an engine question. This information is most commonly found on a tag rivited to the block on the flat next to the flywheel housing mating area on the port side. If this tag is removed most states require the s/n for title purposes and it can be found on the title.

If it is a drive question we need the drive s/n. The many different types of drive out there will have them in many different areas. Once again most states require it for the title.

The reason for this information is simple. Being most familiar with Volvo Penta I can tell you that in 2006 there were over 14 different engine models at least 6 of them were 5.7L's.

If you have to replace the long block, remove this tag and save it or make sure that the shop puts it on the new long block.

With the S/N you can find out everything you ever needed to know about that engine. Any Volvo certified shop or parts center can look up your S/N.

Mercruiser is the same way.

Re: We need info

only issue with that, Volvo, merc and a few others REQUIRE the seriel tag back along with pictures of a destroyed block to get your 500 dollar core back.
its part of the 2010 EPA stuff.
its still cnfusing as the law is very poorly written but its still the law.
right now on certain long block repowers we have to take a picture of the block with the tag installed and a hole knocked in the block at a specific location, then remove the tag and send it with the pictures back to get the 500 dollar core credit, that or simply add 500 dollars to the customers bill.

that info has already been requested. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=342393 check out item 1a, then item 1. granted that it don't specify that we may need the drive s/n. perhaps that should be included in the sticky too as i have seen the real marine techs ask for drive s/n. + when i go to the mercruiser store i've been ask for my drive s/n there too. more often though they want the engine s/n. both are obviously vital info though...

as you can see, many folks don't read this sticky thread.... ;)
