I have a 1995 350 Magnum with a weber 4 bbl carb on it. I am getting ready to rebuild it and the kit that I ordered from did not have any info on float adjustment procedures. This is my first Carter carb so I have no books on them. Can anyone help me out? Don't want to put this together wrong and still have problems.

Re: WEBER/CARTER/AFB Float adjustment

I found out. There are 2 measurements that must be looked at. First one is the float drop. On my Weber 4 bbl. carb, it was 2 inches from the bottom edge of the carb horn to the bottom side of the float. The second measurement is with the horn turned upside down (needle valve closed). This one was 1 9/32's. Once they were adjusted they were even with the horn pretty much. I didn't see anything during a search so I figured I would post this for the next guy down the road.

bryont,<br />This link Used to bring you to the "Tech Page" for the Edlebrock carb, that is an Exact Copy of the Merc/Weber/Carter Carbs....<br />Since they changed their website, you'll need to go to "Tech Tips", then the "Carb Owners manual".....<br /> http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/index.html <br /><br />Everything you could Ever want to know, about your Carb, is in the site posted above......

Re: WEBER/CARTER/AFB Float adjustment

Thanks for the site. It has always had a bog when the secondary's first came in. The site will help a bunch. When I pulled it apart I noticed that it had two different metering rods in the primary's. Here are the stampings, 16-7052 and 6850. The carb is a 9770SA Weber. Can anyone tell me which one is the correct one? It is a 95 350 Mag Alpha one (250 h.p.). Different rods doesn't sound right. Thanks.

Since the rods where different I would check the main jets @ the bottom of the float bowl while you are in there. If someone was willing to run different rods they might be willing to run different main jets as well...

Re: WEBER/CARTER/AFB Float adjustment

I did when I had it apart and dipped/cleaned. All the primaries/secondaries were paired up. The guy I bought it from said he had carb work done on it once. I am guessing that is where the different rods came from. I have a Carter strip kit from a friend. It was bought some time ago and doesn't have the springs but does include pairs of rods/jets. We will see. Thanks

Re: WEBER/CARTER/AFB Float adjustment

Hey Bondo,<br /> I emailed Edelbrock about their site saying not to use their kits with any other brand. They said that their carbs have a different metering system than my Weber. I just don't see it. It seems to be the same design to me. WHat do you think?? The kit is $45, good deal if it works. I know that it will work physically but I wonder about how it will function. Right now along with the different metering rods I believe that I have 9 in. hg. step up springs which are flooding the engine at low 1000-2000 rpm (stepping up to soon).

Re: WEBER/CARTER/AFB Float adjustment

Bondo,<br /> I tried both Jegs and Summit. Neither carry it anymore it seems. The EDL-1488 is a tuning kit for the 1409 marine 600 CFM square bore carb. I would think that it would have enough to dial my carb in. I believe that I am going to go ahead and order one. This is what I am seeing. Tell me if you think that I am on the right track.I believe it to be the stepup springs and rods to be the problem. <br />1. Starts and idles to 1000 rpm perfect.<br /><br />2. once at 2k or above all the way to WOT the boat drives perfectly.<br /><br />3. From 1k-2k on accel, the boat stumbles hesitates and does not except throttle. If you attempt to apply WOT from idle (i.e. pulling a skier out of the water) the boat stalls at 2800. Once there if you pull back on the throttle for an instant then reapply everything is fine to WOT. <br /><br />4. At 3k and slowly (decel)pull back (no accelerator pump) everythin is fine until you hit 1800 or so then the boat surges and runs rough varying between 1300 and 1800 without throttle movement. <br /><br />I believe that what is happening is with the heavy step up springs (I think. They have no color code) that they are going to the cruise setting before they should be and flooding the boat at low RPMs. When I pull back on the throttle, see #3, The engine vaccum increase pulls down the metering rods leaning out the mix and giving the boat time to catch back up. I believe the accel pump to be working correctly.<br />I tried a couple of combos from my friends kit. The problem is that all that is left with the kit is richer settings and there is no springs. I tried going richer and that is definitely not the right direction. <br /><br />Am I thinking this through correctly?

Re: WEBER/CARTER/AFB Float adjustment

bryon,<br />1) 1000rpms is abit High.......<br />2) That's Good....<br />3)4) Go out + run the boat at the Troubling rpms for awhile.......<br />Then Shut it down,+ Check the Color of the Plugs.......<br />Black is Rich....<br />Coffee + Cream is Perfect......<br />White is Lean......<br /><br />You're Probably headed in the Right direction.....<br />But, You're There..... And, I'm Here......<br />I Know the Carter Kit Works(I'm Sure it's ava. Somewhere.. Try a Google search for the part#)....... <br />The Edlebrock I can only Guess at........<br /><br />Good Luck........

Re: WEBER/CARTER/AFB Float adjustment

1. Oops. I meant that it runs correctly between idle 550ish through 1000. <br />I tired google, no help. I can get the rebuild kit but not the strip kit. Summit tells you to call for a substitute so I will give them a call. Problem is the strip kit (btw that is the incomplete kit that my friend let me borrow)has no springs. I'll compare the kit with whats in the carb and see when it gets here. I know the jets that are in my carb now match up part number wise to the edelbrock numbers i.e 120-401 is a .101 jet. Thanks for the help.
