I read on the forum about weed barrier cloth being strong enough to use with

poly resin for a refloor. has this worked for anyone in the past. I have miles of

the stuff in the shed. I have been using bondo poly resin and cloth from an

auto parts store but if i can use the weed barrier, i will stop paying for

fiberglass.

Weed barrier is not fiberglass. It is polypropylene fabric and has no strength as compared to fiberglass cloth. Why invest all the time, supplies (resin) and money to not do it the right way? If it would work...... for less money the boat manufacturer's would have used it.

they call it spunbonded polyester. I have seen it used. just curios about results.

However, Im not known to cut corners. Fiberglass isnt bad to work with, so ill keep doing what im doing.

Thank you for fast replies.

It IS used as a ventilation cloth during vacuum bagging, but I can't imagine any valid use as a structural fiber.

I've seen multiple versions of woven weedcloth. I have to wonder if one version I remember seeing would work as well.

Try it on a sheet of plywood.
Its no good for molding a free standing part but for reinforcement it might be ok. Its only there to prevent the resin from cracking.

Either way you'd be miles ahead if you quit buying glass supplies at auto stores, the bondo resin is full of wax, the unwaxed resins are a lot easier to work with.

Snow or weed barrier material does not have the Binders that are specific to polyester resins.

Im sure you have miles of barrier..but just how much 1.5 oz mat are you going to use for a deck/floor ? lol..

Ive seen alot of people save 40 bucks on a resporator just to spend 800 bucks on westsystem epoxy to do a job that only would cost 400 bucks in poly ;) .

Bondo resin is good for filling small chips/nicks/dings..not full layups...

Get yourself good poly resin and learn yourself on how to wet out glass.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know bondo was waxed. I already used it to seal both sides of the plywood, fill some voids, and to tape the edges to the fiberglass. Can I coat over it with unwaxed resin to lay in the glass?

Just need to grind down a little and wipe down with acetone to make sure you are past the wax level. Bondo brand is considered by some to be less than desirable for large layups. In the long run it is cheaper to buy in bulk rather than by the gallon also.
