Weight?

Is there any reason I need to know the weight of the my old pontoon boat -motor and trailer? I see in a lot of posts where people are giving a lot of advice and they estimate the weight of the boats-motors-and trailers-fuel-and gear. I tow with an old F350 diesel truck and a very heavy duty hitch. So I was just wondering if there is any reason to weigh out the rig?

Re: Weight?

I would think it's useful to know should you need to tow it with a different vehicle.

only reason to wiegh rig besides determining if your truck can tow, is to determine if your state may have requirements for trailer brakes based on the total weight etc.

otherwise, as far as towing goes theres no reason to know the wieght.

Re: Weight?

I don't know the description of your boat.

My old 24' Starcraft is about 2300 lbs. plus 450 lbs for the motor--2750 lbs. With a trailer, it's about 3500 lbs., and well within the weight my Powerstroke diesel 3/4 ton will handle.

Pontoons are actually very light in weight, but they tow heavier than they actually are due to wind resistance. Long trailers are also privy to other forces, like yaw, just because they're so long.

Re: Weight?

In my opinion a good driver know the rig he is handling. This would include having a pretty good idea of what it weighs, how wide, tall, and long it is, and were you stand on your ratings. If you ever need to use a different vehicle, get towed, cross a small bridge, etc. it's good to know. I'm just plain curious too. I've weighted just about every truck and trailer I've ever owned at some point. Some lots of times. Some times I'm surprised how far my assumptions are from reality.

You're towing (as I recall) an eighteen foot barge with a one ton diesel? Pretty sure you're good to go.;) As to why we're always bandying about weight estimates for our rigs, some times it's to be sure we're not exceeding our vehicles' towing capacities, but more often than that it's 'cause we're nerds.:p

Re: Weight?

You need to know the weight to be sure your trailer tires are rated to carry the load.

If in doubt, take your rig to a local sand and gravel business .Have them weigh everything for you. Or the local county dump. They have scales too.
