It protects the prop from rocks, logs and to a lesser extent possibly your leg, foot or hand.

It also helps with downrigger cables and fishing line.

We call them manatee scoops. As you run along in the water they slice out fillets from their backs. Also works on downed divers, water skiers and PWC morons.

OMC experimented with Prop Guards, but found that they created a lot of drag. I expect they are good for certain applications.

They've been trying to idiot proof props for years.

The problem is that idiots are too ingenious.

The type pictured is normally used on small OBs where the primary use is trolling.
