Hello All

After getting the boat out after winter storage, I have found that my Temp Gauge, Fuel Gauge, and Oil Pressure Gauge have all stopped working entirely. Here is some info:
  • No needle movement from these 3 gauges, 2 are pinned to max, 1 pinned to nothing
  • The voltmeter/gauge DOES work
  • I ran the boat for 10-15 minutes on the muffs with no changes to gauges
  • All of these worked properly at the end of last season (I remember specifically checking temp + oil during final winterization)

My first assumption was wiring....so I have checked the purple ignition wire and black ground wire to all of these gauges. All of them are getting 12V consistently (and they are also jumper wired to the voltmeter/gauge which is working fine). Also, all of the dash fuses/breakers are fine and not popped. Not sure where to go from here, as it doesnt seem possible that 3 gauges would mysteriously fail over the winter.

I'm stumped - any guesses? Was hoping to take boat out tomorrow, but with no temp or oil pressure gauge I am hesitant.

Boat is a 1989 Baja Sunsport, 454 w/ Bravo Mercruiser Drive, if that matters

A lot of mysterious elec. problems end up being faulty ground connections.

Check the negative cable connection at the battery. There may be an accessory ground connection via a inline adapter or there may be a terminal block. If you were able to start it, there's probably not a problem at the main cable connection but this is where you want to start trouble shooting from. Starting from the gauges and working back works sometimes but it can end up in a confusing mess.

Just to close this out....after cleaning and re-tightening about 10 ground connections (under the dash+in the bilge) everything worked just fine.

Thanks for the help guys.

check your ground and replace all fuses

You do not need to replace all fuses. The gauges are powered from the "A" (accessory) terminal on the ignition switch which is part of the "Engine" electrical system -- not the "Boat" electrical system which powers the fuse panel.
