my johnson 6 hp seahorse from 1965 , ran on one cylinder yesterday , wile running i pulled one of the plugwires and nothing changed .
but when i held the wire close to the sparkplug (not making contact with the plug) the sparks jumped over to the sparplug and it started to run on bot cylinders again , then i put the plugwire on and it ran like it should .

weird ain't it , what could be causing this problem .

Re: weird johnson

Me thinks it be a time to buy some plug wires. If origonal yours are only 37 years old.

Re: weird johnson

Fouled or shorted plug. When you held the wire out from the plug it didn't arc until a higher point on the voltage curve, but at the plug contacts you gave the voltage a very fast rise time. Plug cleaned itself.

That very fast rise time is why CDI ignition works so much better than magnetos.

I think you need to clean and gap your plugs, or maybe replace them.

Good luck. :)

Gerke.

I hate it when people Yeah-But you with info they witheld the first time.

New electrical parts, including spark plugs, fail more often than old ones.

If the problem comes back, switch the plugs and see if the problem follows the plug.

Good luck. :)

Re: weird johnson

If you're talking about the porcelain being black, it means the plug is leaking. Once it gets a nice coat of carbon on the outside, the spark will follow in to ground.

c/6

Hooty

Re: weird johnson

clean you plugs, use dielectric grease in the boots, clean your carbs, install a water seperator, check you lower unit oil, replace thermostats
