weird problem

once in a while, my chrysler outboard will not start. the starter spins the flywheel, but the motor will not fire. if i run a wire from the positive terminal on the battery to the positive terminal on the coil, there is a small spark and then the motor will fire right up as soon as you touch the key. 95% of the time, this is never a problem. but occasonally this happens and the only way to get the engine to fire is to run that wire. any ideas about what to do?

Sure. Bad connection somewhere. Check and clean at the coil and at the ignition switch and inspect all wiring in between. A little corrosion and this will happen. I suspect the connection at the coil.

I'm wondering if your safety switch is malfunctioning. Follow the yellow and black wires to it . It may be gunked up or corroded.

Re: weird problem

i checked the connection at the coil and that is not the problem. it randomly cuts out while running, today it died twice and i had to spark it again. could the coil be bad?
