454 BBC in the boat listed below, pretty much mercruiser stock rebuilt engine with 10.5:1 compression ratio or so. First bought the boat and was told it had 25 hours or so on the engine which was believable. At first the engine would only turn 4K at WOT with a 27 pitch prop.

Well a few hours into my ownership the thing blew the cheap head gaskets that were on it, long story short, fixed it with better gaskets and found some head bolts holes stripped out and fixed those as well.

After the repairs we checked the timing and found that it was set at about 30 btdc at idle, which made it sound really hot at idle but we reset it back to about 10 btdc and checked the advance at WOT and it looked good at about 15.

At that time the engine performance improved as expected and turned a good 4200 at WOT and was running much better. The following weekend I took it out and was up to 4300 WOT (58MPH) which I attributed to polishing part of the bottom and cleaning up the prop some.

Well last weekend I had it out and it was back to 4K WOT again, I know the timing has not changed much because at idle it sounds the same. I will be checking it this weekend anyways.

Anyone have any ideas why I would get a change in WOT so rapidly from one weekend to the other? (4300 to 4000 with no changes)

Got me scratching my head looking for the answer.
