curious,
i have rebuilt several carbs for the 9.9/15 series. most if not all did not have any shot in the well of the welch plug.

my question, do i really need to install the shot? what happens if it is not installed? out of at least twenty carbs i have pulled apart, none of them had any shot in the welch well.

the parts list calls for three shot per carb. do all three shot need to be installed in the same hole of the welch plug? where do the other two shots go?

thanks

Could you post a pic of where the welch plug goes and what shot you're talking about ??

Under the big welch plug are ports to the carb throat for the metered low speed fuel to enter. No shot there, those ports need to be clear or you won't idle. There are other ports on the outer carb body where the lead shots go. I've never removed/replaced 'em myself when cleaning carb.

Good luck!

+1. The small ports under the welch plugs should be squeaky clean.

Numbers 4 & 5 are two different core / welch plugs. Number 2 is the lead shot, it states 3 per as you said. Best of my memory, I know there are at least 2 lead shot plugs on my carb near the area of the welch plugs (at least top side) and they are just on the exterior of the carb to block drilled veins. Maybe parts list lists 3 in case you screw one up? You may not see them right away, but mine have sharp little tits on 'em. I don't know the procedure for replacing them. My luck, they would melt and fill the entire vein!

There should be no need to replace the lead plugs, they are there to cap off a drill passage made when the carb was made. I can't ever remember having to remove them for any reason and can't remember ever seeing one just fall out.

Ok thanks for clearing things. I do see where the shot is used to plug some outside casting holes. Just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing something.
