Re: Welding

Thats about it... it's an old boat.... the title says ..." boat"... so ....Just curious if perhaps there was a standard for boats and water ....it's my first boat and I haven't welded since Jr high school.... teaching myself to weld :laser: :ambivalence: ... The reading I do says aircrafts use X series and tricycles use Y series ... and most of the boat stuff I read says 5000 series... I guess a better question I could ask is what negative effects would I get if I threw my truck tool box into boat and cut a sunroof in my car and threw that piece of metal into my boat... There are lots of differenf types of sheets of alluminum ... it's spendy and I don't want to buy the wrong stuff...thanks

That's kinda funny right there, nice:lol:

Well, how about this: Post up some photos of what you are working on. The guys around here are awesome at helping out with solid advice.

In many cases (depending on application) it's better to rivet in an alum "patch" along with 3M 5200. See, welding sorta makes the alum rigid and it can crack in time. Also, welding alum is far more challenging than steel so the skill set is a bit different.

Ayuh,... If yer gonna mig it, yer choices of filler metals are 5000 series, or 4000 series,...

Both will weld yer boat... It matters more to yer welder, than the final product...

If ya need panels, or parts, it really don't much matter what ya use, as their all pretty much weldable with the 2 filler wires available...

If you could be more specific, so can the answers...
