My wife?s family rents a house in Bethany Beach, DE each year, and the past two years I have wanted to cruise my 24? maxum sport cuddy from Delaware City down the Delaware River into the Bay, out into the Atlantic and back into Bethany. The trip is about 82 miles.
Today I and my buddy made the trip. About 10 miles into it we started hitting 2-3 waves. They didn?t let up until we were 3 miles from the marina where I?m keeping the boat. We cruised about 25 - 30 mph and it took us 2 hours & 45 mins. I used about 35 gallons of fuel. I think we would have made much better timing and better fuel economy had it not been for the 70 mile of 2-3 footers.
I was a little nervous about the 15 mile cruise in the ocean especially since I only have inland towing coverage, but we made it. When we entered the Indian River inlet it was rolling really good!! I would say there were a few 5-6 footers. We took about the top 10" of one wave over the bow and into the cockpit and my bow sits pretty high too. It was pretty exciting to say the least.
We?re just going to be boating the Rehoboth bay and inland waters. I had brought the trailer down earlier so when I head back up Tuesday the boat is going by land.
All in all I?m glad to have done it. I probably won?t do it again unless I know the water will be smoother.
