I took the LU apart from a 71 johnson electric shift 60hp motor. My question is, before I put it back together do I have to do the shimming and stuff. I was reading in my manual and it has a section about shimming the drive shaft. Cant I just put everything back together in the order I took it apart, or will that not work? If I do have to do some shimming, is it hard, and does it take special tools?

On that model, just use the shims, if any, that were there when you dismantled the unit.

If you are replacing any of the associated parts, yes you must check the shimming. And yes, it takes a special tool. However, if re-using the same parts, just re-use the original shims.

I will be replacing the forward gear, reverse gear, and the clutch dog if I can find the parts. If I am right though, the shimming is only associated with the vertical drive shaft and the gear on the bottom end of that shaft. So, no shimming will be required, Correct?
