Just bought a used 1996 Wellcraft Excel 23 Cuddy Cabin w/Johnson Ocean
Runner 200 2-stroke. I have been using it for over a year with no problems and runs strong.

The only issue is that I smell gas fumes in the cuddy cabin when I first open it up. However, the smell goes away about ten minutes after I open the cabin doors and hatch. I had the boat inspected for gas leaks at Lockwood Marine, GA, but, they said there was no leak. They said that the plastic gas tanks permiates this smell, but it is not dangerous. In fact, they said that they did't smell much gas in my cabin anyway. However, my wife, my neighbor, and I smell gas without a doubt.

So, this being my first boat, my question is if this is normal to always smell some gas in the cabin when first opening the doors? And, if this is normal, how could anyone spend the night sleeping in a cabin with the doors closed during rain????? Thanks

The fumes are coming in from the bilges. I definitely would not consider it normal. There is a leak somewhere, even if it's just the vent line that came off, causing the tank to vent to the bilge instead of outside the boat. If you don't get it fixed you run a very high risk of an explosion from the fumes. I don't see how you could sleep down there with the smell either.

Thanks for the post. The service guy said they checked all lines and could not find a leak. But, I'll take your advice and pull the panel off the vent line side to make sure it is attached.

Well, the vent line is attached and it is not clogged. Any other suggestions?

I hope I will not have to have the plastic gas tank replaced because we would need to cut the floor out to access it.

My guess would be the fuel tank. Pressurize it and attach a gauge so you can monitor the pressure drop. Or you can just go with what the marine pro says. My guess would be the smell is why the boat was for sale.
