West Coast Newbie...Sixties Starcraft "Fury" Purchased Today! A few questions??

I purchased what appears to be an early-mid sixties Starcraft Fury yesterday here in San Diego. I have restored a few Whalers and Hobie Skiffs along the way, but I must say I never heard of Starcraft before. This was a Clist find and what I could see of the photo was enough to hook me on the ultra cool hull profile and I paid $250 and hitched her up. I took it to the self serve car wash and spent $15 in quarters and about an hour spraying off years of muck and scooping out inches of leaves and stuff out of the interior and vacuming it out. Then I got her home and did a bit more clean-up.

Here is the result:

http://www.vuvox.com/collage/detail/043570c6a9

So last evening and this morning I have spent about 3 hours after finding this forum going through the treasure trove of information you all have amassed here! Holy cow, you guys (girls...) have some amazing boats! And I am learning now that Starcraft seems to have been (is?) an iconic and seemingly historic boat manufacturer.

I enjoyed going through the brochures and am struck at how cool this company compiled their model names: Fury, Rocket, Falcon, SeaBreeze, Scout, Ranger...on and on the names just shout vintage coolness!

So, perhaps you get the point that I am impressed with Starcraft and so happy I stumbled upon this boat, and this forum.

Now, to my questions. It appears that y'all from the midwest are in the sweet spot for finding these boats as that is where they were made. They also seem to be prolific for the manufacture of aluminum hulls. So...are the fiberglass hulls harder to find? Were glass hulls a "diversion" for Starcraft? Secondly, my Fury model seems to be a bit rare...is this accurate? I only saw one or two others on the site and none that seem to have been fully restored?

Lastly, I have no title, nor do I know the year of manufacture. My Starcraft manufacturers plate has the model name and the serial number is:

65 - P - 252 0 (I am not certain the final digit is a number or a letter "G"/"O")

I would presume she is a 1965, but would love certainty from those of you that know how to decipher the manufacturers code.

The old Johnson 40 Electric Seahorse appears to be a 1965 from the serial number postings I have found on the net. The serial number here is:

J25750LR

I have no idea if the motor will run, but irrespective of that, if I keep the boat, I will likely re-power and suspect that this old relic will have some value to someone for parts, etc. Particularly with the shifter/controls still intact and in good condition.

So before thinking it through, I posted the boat on Craigslist myself last evening before finding this Forum figuring I would "flip" her to someone that would give her more love. However, now after finding this Forum and learning more about these cool boats, I am now thinking of keeping her and doing a partial restoration. The hull is just so swweet, and she is pretty much intact. Even the windshield is fairly clean and should polish out nicely. My thought would be to simply clean her up, replace some of the fittings and perhaps polish some of the aluminum trim, attend to the bad indoor/outdoor carpet cockpit covering, and then repower her keeping the hull and paint in its original condition.

I would love to learn your thoughts about what seems to be a rare find here for the Left Coast, and thank all of you for contributing to this amazing forum.

Best,
JB

Re: West Coast Newbie...Sixties Starcraft "Fury" Purchased Today! A few questions??

Well...I sold the Johnson Outboard this week for $145 offsetting my initial purchase price of $250! So now I am into the little Fury for a grand total of $105!

I am pretty excited and about to embark on a partial restoration and re-power.

I have a pretty nice Honda 15hp four stroke...Anyone have any comments on a 15hp matching up with this 14' little beauty?

Hey for a hundred bucks you almost can't go wrong. 15 horses sounds a little low to me for a glass boat, but there are others here who can give you a better answer.

I just wanted to say welcome to the Starmada. Posting pics and already turning parts around to reduce your total outlay, you're gonna fit in just fine here.

I would strongly suggest getting underneath that carpet and even under the deck to check out the condition of the floatation and the hull underneath. Could be some ooky nastiness under there that needs attention. You don't know until you know - ya know?

That is a great call on the deck and what may lurk below it. I took the carpet off yesterday afternoon. It looks as though a prior owner may have replaced the deck as there appears to be glass matting job over it, but it was getting to dark to tell for certain.

I appreciate the comment about the 15hp outboard. I may look for a larger power source that would match up better in both HP and vintage.

Re: West Coast Newbie...Sixties Starcraft "Fury" Purchased Today! A few questions??

Seems pretty common when we first buy the boat, we say something to the effect of "the deck/transom wood seems pretty solid", and sure enough we dig in a little closer, we find that it is in fact mulch and we end up replacing everything. You can watch me go through that very thing at the link in my signature.

If your boat actually floats, why not throw the 15 on the back and go splash it and decide for yourself if it's enough? Or save yourself the trouble and just send it to me - I have an aluminum 14 footer that would just LOVE a 4 stroke 15hp. I have a 6hp on it now. Top speed is 6 mph. I can actually paddle my kayak faster.

Ok Amigo Paparoof...you are a sage...or should I say prognosticator? I pulled the old Zebco seat stanchions which provide 3" inspection holes into the dreaded under deck area...it does not look good ....haha. I was fooling myself that I would get away with an easy exit on this portion of the project...but no...drat it I am going to have to pull the whole darn thing out.

You know...I am so lite into the boat that I might as well.

I had hoped I would have gotten more response from the group...if you look at my original post...several questions have gone unanswered...oh well...we all have busy thangs going on!

Sorry man! We're really all tin guys down here.

From what I've seen, Starcraft made (and still does) probably 50%/50% glass/aluminum boats. However, glass boats are more difficult and expensive to repair so a lot more of them have probably made their way to the dump than the tinnies. There weren't nearly as many aluminum boat manufacturers as there were glass ones. In the 50s ad 60s there were hundreds of companies making small closed-bow runabouts like yours, some only making a handful of boats.

Don't lose hope JB - like EZ said, we're more of an aluminum crowd than a glass crowd. I spent a summer building aftermarket fiberglass car body parts - it's the only job I've ever walked out on. But that doesn't mean you can't get what you want outta this boat.

And for specific info about this model/hull, if the folks here don't know, at least TRY asking the Starcraft people themselves: info@starcraft-monark.com

Here's the silver lining - with only $100 into it, you're still sitting pretty. Here are the options I see:

1 - Fix it:
Take the floor out. If possible, save the pieces for use as templates for cutting out a new floor - this'll save you LOTS of time and effort. Once you have full access to the actual hull, poke gently at it looking for soft spots in the glass hull. That should tell you if it's worth restoring or not. If it's solid, then just clean it up and restore it just like the rest of us are doing. For glass-specific issues, read this mega-thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=234392. You'll know everything there is to know on that subject. For further (Starcraft-specific) guidance and inspiration, read all our resto threads (most of them are linked in our signatures).

If you happen to find the hull itself to be in such bad shape that you don't want to tackle it....

2 - Part it out and sink the money into an aluminum boat:
Remove every single component and sell 'em all off a piece at a time (you'll easily end up in the black) then just chop up the hull with a sawzall (and full protective suit, gloves and respirator mask) and haul it to the dump (read Jasoutside's threads for inspiration here). Or even keep all the parts in anticipation for your aluminum boat. Some of these parts may replace broken or worn out parts on the next boat. Then once you complete your aluminum boat, sell off whatever's leftover.

Of course, there's always option 3.

3 - Throw the 15 on there and splash it and see what happens! Just stay close to the ramp until you're positive it's not gonna sink. This option could provide invaluable in choosing between options 1 and 2 above.

Whatever option you choose, the Starmada will be here for you and we'll help as much as we can!

Paparoof...

I love you dude...lets go grab a cold frosty! I was actually considering option 3 above, I could risk it because I do a mean dogpaddle...

In all seriousness...I have opted to fix it. Photos below show todays work removing the deck. The glass work on the stringers appears to have been less than perfect and have several gaping holes that allowed water intrusion underneath the stringers. I am not quite certain at the moment what the proper fix is but will investigate the thread you mention above to see what I can learn. I am in San Diego and have restored a few vessels along the way and have a couple of great glass guys to assist. I am crazy about the lines of the hull and am compelled (addicted...afflicted) to get this boat restored and ready.

I really appreciate the truthful response about you Aluminum guys...I get it. I appreciate the aluminum boats and will be looking for one...the Starcraft Aluminums are a bit rare out here on the Left Coast.

Thanks again...I will keep all posted!

Best,
JB

Ew.... I see exposed wood through some of those holes. I bet it's mulch.

Pardon my ignorance but is it just a fiberglass bottom, then wood stringers wrapped in glass? If it is, I would guess ya just grind 'em out entirely, taking extra super careful-ness (that's not even a word) to not cut into the bottom. Patch up whatever ya need to on the hull with new glass then glass in new wood stringers also wrapped in glass - yes?

My arms are getting itchy just thinking about it.

Keep the pics coming JB - you can teach us tin-heads all about fiberglass work!

Yea baby fix her up. Just because we are all shy of glass work doesn't mean you should be. There are plenty of guys on Iboats that do glass work. Check out Friscoboaters thread, he rebuilds a Sea ray. I'll post a link if I can find it.

Cool boat, I'm glad it gets a second chance. By the way I would have kept the old Johnson, them things are bullet proof.

Re: West Coast Newbie...Sixties Starcraft "Fury" Purchased Today! A few questions??

JB,
First off sorry for not responding to your questions. I try to do a good job here at least tryin to help folks figure out what year and model their Starcraft is, regardless of whether it's glass or tin. Somehow I missed this one.

Starcraft only made the Fury for two years-1964 and 1965. In 64 it was a tanish brown color top and bottom called Sandlewood Tan. In 65 it was Corsair White hull and Captain's Blue top. With that info and the 65 in the serial number (not always the year but more often than not in the early to mid 60's) we should call this a 65.

It weighs 455 pounds without the motor and is recommended to run an outboard between 10 and 35 HP.

Here's the brochure page and also the glass boats fact page out of the brochure. Hope this helps.

Hey North Beach...Thanks for that help. If you look, my original post is a year old. Since then, I have repaired the floor and lost interest in the glass Starcraft and have the hull for sale here in San Diego for $200!

However, I am not Starcraft deprived as I just yesterday picked up a 1971 Starcraft that I believe is a Falcon! Got it for $500 with a nice Merc and trailer. This one will take priority as the restoration candidate that I originally planned on the glass SC.
