Didn't see a category for generators so here goes:

Looking to pick up a used Westerbeke WTW 6.5 generator, the owner says it runs fine but has a strong fuel smell coming from the exhaust while running.

The only things I can think of that would cause this:

- bad spark plug

- bad plug wire

- bad distributor (what is the likelihood that this is the problem)

with either of the above happening wouldn't it be blatantly obvious that one of the cylinders is not firing?

any other things that could cause this?

thank you
tim

Re: Westerbeke

Bad valves, bad rings, bad carb, bad ___________ (fill in the blank)

It's hard to say what is wrong, A bit of troubleshooting is in order to find out. Trust me, a strong fuel/exhaust smell does not mean ignition problem only.

Re: Westerbeke

Thanks Don, I will probably go look at the unit this weekend and from what you have said, I will:

- check all plugs for fire

- do a compression test (any ideas on psi numbers)

if these check out well, then assume carburetor issues?
