from what i can tell this is wet fouling and the manual says this can cause sludge in some engines and is caused by the following.

A/spark plug heat range too cold.

B/prolonged trolling.

C/low speed carb adjustment too rich.

D/improper fuel-oil ratio.

E/induction manifold bleed-off passage obstructed.

F/worn or defective breaker points.

if your engine ran like this and you had wet plugs WHAT WOULD YOU DO???
THANKS
MAR T

I'd clean and overhaul the carbs and I'd fix the neutral safety switch so you can start it in neutral.

You don't have one carb, you have two. Do yourself a favor and buy a service manual or check one out at your local library. If buying one, buy one specific to your engine. Some are very generic and of little use. Carbs need to be removed, disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, blown out with compressed air and reasembled with new kits. As for starting, you have a fast idle lever at the top of the control box. Raise it when starting.

Just looking at it and I'd say your timing is way off! Measure the little horizontal bar right under the flywheel and compare to your link and sinc settings. Could be because I had the same problem :D

are you talking about the blk plastic bar with the pivots? and what is the link and sinc setting? are you refering to the bolt right under the blk plastic bar? as i said i can fix it if you tell me what it is where it is and why do i need to fix it.

i was reading the manual and it looks like i should be useing a surface gap plug not a conventional plug IS THIS TRUE?
ps feel free to copy the picture and edit it pointing out the things were talking about
thanks for the help
mar t

Yes Marty, the black plastic bar with the pivots. In my manual 1992 it says that the initial setting from tip to tip should be 53 mm (2 and 1/16 inch). As the plastic adjusters seem to connect my guess is that your timing is early, causing the pistons to get a knock on the head while travelling upwards during idle. So you have a manual which will give you the right distance for your motor. I'm not saying this is THE problem, but you can now rule it out if the distance is OK. It was the problem I had. Good luck!!
Frank
