With a four stroke, compression tests are sometimes done dry first, wet second. Wet means you squirt some oil in the cylinder. You can expect the wet readings to be higher, but if any are a Lot higher, that usually indicates a problem that might otherwise be missed with a dry test alone.<br /><br />For instance, if a dry test shows low compression and a wet test shows good, then there's a cylinder scoring or sticking ring problem. If both tests are low, then you can suspect valves. One repair would involve an overhaul, the other could just mean a valve job.<br /><br />Two stroke compression tests are usually done dry because there's probably residual oil already on the cylinder walls.
