I have 19' outrage with a 150 Yamaha. All commercial fishermen in this area use Yamahas and this one has been nothing short of outstanding for 10 years..I love it.

My delima is...I want a bigger Whaler real bad..but can't bring myself to buy Mercury and they are owned bye one in the same so it just won't happen...and Im not alone with this delima... Dealer is having a hard time moving these boats with Mercs Optimax....

Im at dealer today looking at a 23' real hard and some drive up with a 22' having motor problems on a brand new 225 Merc Optmax..

When I tell you I have never done a thing to my Yamaha I mean it....Im sold on them but want a new boat.

So I may be opening a huge can of worms here by asking THE BIG QUESTION !!!!

TELL MY YOUR PROBLEMS WITH MERC 150 OR 175 OPTIMAX...2001 or newer only...

Many initial problems like wire harness and air sensor have been taken care of in 2001 on up...

SO LET ME HAVE YOUR COMMENTS ON MERC 150-175 opt .saltwater series...

Steve
Louisiana

You aren't going to get anywhere with a Merc bashing party, Steve. You will just stir up anger.

Go find a used Outrage 24 or 25 with Yamaha power or repower it. :)

Steve12 are you saying your dealer can't get you a Whaler only, without power?

Whaler will not sell a boat without an engine built by . A benefit of Brunswick Corp ownership.

The only possible option would be a boat from the Whaler Commercial Product Division. Since they sell to government, I am not sure that the CPD requires that you buy a Mercury, but that is the only possibility.

I am glad I got my Montauk in 2000 which was the last year they sold an unpowered boat.

Sorry- I have to pipe in on this one. I think Brunswick is going to take Whaler down the sh***er. The new whalers to me are cheap POS's no better than any other of the zillions of offshore boats out there. Your old 19 Outrage is a beautiful, supurbly crafted boat, and if I were you I would buy a classic mid to late 80's 25' Outrage, refurbish it, and power it with twin 150-200 OX66 or HPDI yammies. Not that I have a problem with mercs- I just have a Massive problem with huge corporate conglamorates such as brunswick taking a wonderful company like whaler and ruining everything that made it so wonderful in the first place by cheaping it up. Check out David Pascoes' web site survey of a 25' new whaler at www.yachtsurvey.com and you'll see what I mean. F*****G corporate execs and their golden parachutes... Greedy *******s will ruin any good company. Wonder when Brunswick and Genmar will be busted for false revenue reporting too???  ;)

Steve, get your head out of the sand and have a serious look at the optimax, speak to commercial operators who own optimax and ask them about fuel savings. I am aware of optimax motors that have over 2000 hours on the clock. If you want to stay with Yamaha then so be it but Please get your facts right.
