I have a 96 mercury 115 elpto and I removed the prop and shaft. I forgot to put the shifter in gear before I done it. Now my prop is in gear but my shifter is not. What do I need to do to fix this?

If you only removed the prop shaft, it did not have to be in gear you have lost the plunger that is supposed to be in the center of the prop shaft between the cam in the unit and the clutch dog cross pin

I still have the pin. Does the ball bearings go right in behind the pin? Either way those must have fell out in the housing because I dont have them. How hard is it to pull the lower unit off to get them out? Do they suppose to go between item 7 and 9?

I had tried putiing it in gear and putting it back together and now my reverse is nuetral. But like I sad I dont have the 3 ball bearings. I know to pull the whole lower unit i think I'm suppose to have it in gear. Is there going to be anything to come flying out when I take the 4 bolts out to drop the lower unit? Have I messed up the likage putiing it back together in gear and shifting it form forward to reverse?

If the lower unit has not been down then taking it down is a waste of time, some units don't have the balls in them but when they do they go between the follower and the pin, in as muct as your shift spacing is wrong your's probably did have the balls

I went ahead and took it to my not so local marine repair!:( They gonna check it out for me. Should have it back monday. I'm gonna stick to what I know, (diesels and welding) and leave that to the pros!:D
