What A Mess!!

preparing the new ply for the deck sends me back to the drawing board and you guys for geting it right.

the matt i had is a no 588 on the bag. very thick 2x4 stringee fibers that come all apart when touched. i was sparingly using the resin which i believe caused the mess. the material was balling up the more i tried spreading the resin, eventually all in one place and resin in the middle.

from the start i thought material was wrong because how easy it came apart.

so how about letting me know the right way to prepare my ply for the new deck. after the glass is down it's painting and non skid peel n stick flooring for finish.

thanks again

Re: What A Mess!!

You can't use resin sparingly on fiberglass mat. You have to dump it on in big puddles and spread it with a bondo spreader or you get the stringy mess you're dealing with.

Here's how I do it:

1) cut the piece to fit the area
2) mix resin
3) spread resin with a paintbrush on the area that's getting glassed
4) lay down the fiberglass mat
5) dump a bunch more resin on it
6) spread it with a bondo spreader until it's fully wetted
7) get the bubbles out
8) repeat!

chief, your right, it didn't take me long to figure out mo resin, mo resin. changed matt also, got some that is woven alot tighter and doesn't fall apart while working on it.

but i stopped glassing for the moment. see my new post, glassing dilema.

my friend....you really need to do some reading here.

you must put the matt down first.....then the cloth.....the matt is chopped strand matt......the cloth is a generic term for any thing woven.

never lay the cloth down against a substraight with out csm first !...(unless you are using epoxy....and you arent)
