I'm doing a fiberglass repair to the bilge area where i had to remove the livewell fill thru hull fitting. I'm buying a new fitting to reinstall and was wondering what adhesive to use. It looks like a plumbers putty looking adhesive was on there initially.

Thanks.

I would go with 3M 4200. If you go with 5200 and ever need to remove it you will need a chisel & hammer.

I see alot more people using 4200 instead of 5200 these days. I still like the 5200 myself because that's all Ive ever used. Tuluene and a paint scraper have aided me in removing deck or underwater hardware. But....5200 is only as strong as the (gelcoat, painted, whatever) surface it's attached to.

Livewell fill?...Solittle has better advice.

I'll stick with the 5200 for thru hull fittings. Have never had one fail, and don't plan on starting now. Just make sure you don't use a plastic thru/hull fitting.

5200 is my recommendation as its intended for below the waterline. I would rather need tools of destruction to remove something than to risk a leak.

5200 is a great adhesive and also a sealant that can be used under water. 4200 is a great sealant that also is an adhesive that can be used under water. I always figured use a sealant to seal, and an adhesive to stick stuff together, particularly after that blotch of gelcoat came off with the factory 5200 'sealant' ...

like sasto says.... alot of people are using 4200 ......but for me....anything below the water line gets 5200.

imho.....it is the correct tool for the job.
