What am I doing wrong

I have an 85hp Johnson OB with side controls (1979). I am new to boats with side controls all I have had is tiller models.

1.I primed the engine with the priming bulb till firm.

2. Placed key in ignition and pulled choke out(last owner put a manual choke on the motor)

3. turned key and the engine cranks and cranks and does not fire.

Have missed I turning on something?? It acts as if on a tiller motor the run/stop switch is in stop postion. However, I can't find anything on the motor or side controller that is marked. Sorry for the stupid question
