Ok, 1988 OMC Cobra 5.0L GM motor. Just replaced both the the transom shift cable and the remote control shift cable. the main question is why do I have soo much slop in the transom shift cable...as in when it's not connected to shift bracket I can move the cable in/out quite a bit before it will even try to engage the clutch dogs....what did I miss when I installed it?

You need to check for "lost motion" on your cables and your control. The easiest way to get rid of a lot of the "lost motion" is to make sure your forward shift cable is tied into place along its entire length so it doesn't move. The other place is the remote control itself. If there is a lot of slop due to the control, I would just replace the control. That's what I did when I used to have a Cobra on a Bayliner. They put the cheapest control you can imagine on the thing.
