So, I'm going to Aquapaloosa this weekend and am going to get a stern anchor. What kind of anchor are people using for that?

I currently have a danforth anchor for the bow and my marina says that another danforth for the stern would work good as well.

I am going to be anchoring in the Potomac River which seems to be kinda mucky on the bottom. Would another Danforth work just fine or look for something else?

If the main Danforth is working for you, another one for the stern seems appropriate.

If it is a muddy bottom, and you don't want to spend a lot of money, a mushroom anchor should work well enough to keep you from swinging around...remember to still use chain

You don't say what kind of boat you have, so .......IN GENERAL, yes a Danforth type anchor will work assuming that it is rigged similar to your bow anchor as it relates to scope. You might also use a heavier anchor like a mushroom or navy style to keep the stern anchor closer to the boat. Even with these heavier anchors, I would not recommend trying to rig it straight up and down. Scope on the stern anchor ( IMO ) should not be less than 2.5 to 1. Obviously, the bow anchor as your primary should have more scope.

Enjoy the show.:)

Sorry I forgot to include the boat. It's a Sea Ray 185

We use a mushroom anchor for our stern anchor. Especially in mucky bottom.

Oh and by the way tell us about aquapalloooza. I have always wanted to go to one of those.

use the mushroom on the stern because it is not as good as a danforth. That way if the tide changes or you get waves over the stern you are not as likely to swamp and sink.
If you are on a river with current, then bow into the current, never stern.
