They cover the water intakes & supply water to the engine when run out of water. You attach a hose to them at a faucet. The look a bit like ear muffs. Good for flushing & winterizing. Never run an outboard without water.

Easily: http://www.tenob.co.nz/flusher.htm and only $20 !

You must remember also, that running the motor with no load involves a risc of 'runaway' (uncontrolled high rpm) so you should at all times keep rpm low on muffs (limit approx 1500 rpm which sounds like high idle).

Also bear in mind that your exhaust will not be silenced and may disturb one or two neighbours

Just a couple of notes
When using mickey mouse ears, (muffs) Keep close attention as they can slide out of position and result in no water to the engine. Also they can give you a false impression that your water pump is functioning at 100%. Example; Say your impeller is worn and only providing half the flow of a new one. The muffs are providing pressurized water to the intakes thus boosting the flow giving the impression that the pump is working at 100%
With a smaller motor I prefer to use a tank or garbage pail which gives the added bonus of having the motor under some load when running in gear thus no run away and muffles exhaust noise.

Re: What are engine muffs?

Thats odd that you can't find a decent container. I have run motors up to 85 horse in a regular plastic 55 gallon garbage can purchased from Wal-Mart. You can also get muffs at Wal-mart as well. You don't have any garbage cans laying around?

I also second Just Jed in using a container over muffs. If you do find and use a container, make sure that water is above the cavitation plate (tha largest horizontal plate above the prop), otherwise you could have problems getting the water pump to prime. I only use muffs if I know the water pump if fine and I am doing some other task that requires the motor to be running.

Just noticed your location. I am not sure that New Zealand has Wal-Mart or K-mart. You could try a livestock supply outlet and see if they have any of those cattle watering cans, but that might be a bit of money to spend just to see if a motor runs. Anyway, good luck....

Re: What are engine muffs?

Hello
use the muffs. change the water pump everyother year. never ever run the motor without water supplied to the pump.and change the thermostats while your doing the pump. if you ever "NEED" a pump there is a good chance you will Need pistons and such as well. I use a bungee cord to help hold trhe muffs on. I too learned the hard way about muffs sliding off the gear case.
lucky it only cost me a pump kit.
Good luck and keep posting

A home made plywood box holds water amazingly well and can be built to any spec.

Also..
Don't rev the motor high on muffs. Keep it at @1200 RPM. This is the manual's recommendation.

Re: What are engine muffs?

I don't really trust them :p :p I looked in the
phone book under "barrels" and found a place that sells those 55gal plastic drums. Almost everything from syrup to vinegar ect. comes in 55gal drums. These are easy to clean out and you can cut the top off. (some even have removable tops) :D :D I put a hose fitting on the bottom so I can drain it when I'am done. It's sturdy, lightweight, and I use it as a rain barrel too. Cost $15.00. No fuss, no mess. Used to use a plastic tub but was a real pain

I can't imagine any place in the world where outboards are available and there's not a 30-50 gal garbage can available.I suspect that you have a boat if you have a motor,so you just tilt the motor, put the can under it,put the motor back down, fill with water.Viola!

Polk,

See if you can lay your hands on a 200 litre (44gls) oil or fuel drum and either sit it upright and cut it at the right height to fit under your motor or do as we do for the larger motors and cut a section lengthways out of the side and lower the motor down into it. Make sure you flush drum out well first if it has had fuel in it AND DON'T USE GAS CUTTING EQUIPMENT TO CUT IT, I have been using these drums for about 30 years on my big motors and my next door neighbour has done the same with his 9.9 and 35 hp motors for even longer.

Bob
