what are loopers and the other style?

I don't know the difference and have seen the term "this motor is a looper" so many times I just had to ask. What is the difference tween the styles?

Please excuse me if this is a dumb question but I don't think there are any of them.

Looper motors do not have a deflector on the top of the piston to guide the in coming fuel / air charge.------Looper motors use aimed intake ports to scavenge the exhaust out of the cylinder and put a fresh charge in place.-----The fresh charge " loops " around the cylinder to drive the exhaust out hence the term " looper "

The advantages are more power for a given engine size, and lighter pistons resulting in less reciprocating weight. Each piston must come to a complete stop at the end of each stroke, then accelerate to the end of the next stroke and stop again. Easier for a light piston to do that than a heavy piston. That's why a chainsaw can run 10,000 RPM without flying apart.
