I'm new to boating and fixing up an old rowboat.
On the sides of the boat, near the stern are these fittings, there's one on each side.
What are they? The only thing I could come up with was something to hook a bilge line to, but found it odd that it would be on both sides for bilge. THen though maybe something for a live well with one side being intake and the other exhaust.

unless someone was rigging some kind of hanging system, i'd say it's for bilge pumps. Don't know why there are 2. I've seen people mount hand pumps in the stern of small boats.

Re: What are these?

I'm guessing they put axles through those holes and had wheels attached so the boat could be flipped over and moved around easily.

Re: What are these?

I was guessing some sort of lifting/storage mechanism for getting the boat off the water more easily. I can't see that being a bilge issue as there's no fitting on the inside to connect to.

I'll second that. My uncle has smaller aluminum boat he takes camping with him that he's rigged up the same way.

Re: What are these?

That saves a needless trailer expense for light enough boats.

PLUS you should see those wheels let you bypass a long line of Bull Crappers talking on the ramps.

Re: What are these?

The boat could have been used on some motor-restricted lakes with remote/portage only access. On the Minnesota/Canadian border in the Boundary Waters, I've seen people rig up small boats like this to use as portage wheels. Normally one would just haul a canoe but wheels on a boat like this would make for some fine fishing in those remote lakes.

Re: What are these?

They are attachment points for wheels and/or handles. The wheels have individual axles and the handle is a straight bar that goes thru for 2 person lifting.

On articulated gimbals to achieve proper thrust angles?

Scotty, I need a little more downward thrust to raise the bow & clear the tree roots ahead. Engage..........

It's been confirmed. I got in touch with my brother in law on the other coast, it was his dad's boat. Those fittings were for wheels.

Well that settles that - though I bet they could be converted for rocket use :D

I still think the rocket idea would work. What the worst that could happen, right?!
