what are these?
The little wood strips embedded in the hull.

bow.jpgport under console.jpgwood in hull 1.jpganother 2.jpg

They were under the stringers and also where the deck attaches to the hull. some of them are delaminating from the hull(bad factory glass job). Should i remove them if they are rotten ? If removed... then what

Re: what are these?

they look like shims to keep the stringer off the hull....dont know what the forward ones are for.

if you dont use them and just place the wood on the glass you will get a hard joint.....and your glass will not move and flex properly.
cracking the gellcoat and glass.

if you remove them...fine.....just replace with something.....i use popsicle sticks to keep the hull off the deck.

during your gut out...... remove all wet or rotten wood....all of it.

you use popsicle sticks to keep the "hull off the deck?"

Re: what are these?

lol yeah i figured thats what he meant...now how about where the deck meats the hull? should that be treated the same as stringers to hull? or can it be tight?

Re: what are these?

Normally there's a slight gap between the deck and the hull and you use Peanut Butter(Resin, cabosil, and chopped milled fibers mixed to the consistency of creamy Peanut Butter) to fillet and cove the gap. You then place a 8 to 10" tabbing of 1708 biaxial cloth to tie the deck to the sides of the hull. Check the first link in my signature below for drawings on how to fabricate and install your stringers, transom and deck.

Where those pieces under the stringers? It looks like kent strips...the look to follow the cure of the hull and stringers would go straight. Mine had these as I discovered on a small section, but mine where never under the stringers. I left mine alone as the spot I found was not rotten or wet. I have a hard time seeing rotten stringers...yet the Popsicle sticks made it out unscathed. lol

Re: what are these?

yeah i believe they are "kent" or "cant" strips and they run under each stringer until the hull curves away from them. they are also where the deck contacts the hull. What im thinking is they are to fill in the v sections (chines or strakes?)in the hull for filler, strength, and to prevent hard joints from contacting the bare hull.
The reason i took mine out is the glass was pretty loose and just crapily done from the factory which caused some of them to be rotten, wet or just have a lot of dirt and grime in or under them. glad i did too because any of the glass under them was a dried out mess.
I've had this saying (got to get to fresh glass) the whole time while grinding. I have basically been grinding any and all csm and resin off so now im down to bare woven roving. looks nice and smooth

Re: what are these?

lol.....

i guess i had a heavy dyslexia day.

all you have to do is prevent the wood from touching the hull....

at the deck hull joint....its thickened resin....(its called peanut butter here on the fourms)

for the recipe.....click the link in my sig

Re: what are these?

yeah oops i have already copy/pasted that recipe.
Since i have removed the wood from those areas should i put new wood back in its place? they're like 2x2 riped in half at an angle, which gives you a right angle triangle profile. 100_1143.jpg i know if i tried to fill in with peanut butter it would take A LOT100_1139.jpg100_1140.jpg

Re: what are these?

If she were mine, I'd fabricate some replacement filler pieces from either Douglas Fir or Southern Yellow Pine and coat them with resin. Both are highly resinous woods and very water resistant. I'm mix some PB and place a bead of it in the grooves using a large plastic bag with a corner cut off like a pastry bag. I'd then bed the pieces in the PB. I'd finish up by filling any gaps with PB and smoothing to the hull and then lay 1 -2 layers of CSM over them to attach to the hull. You could then place and tab the stingers on top of them and to the hull. That's just how I'd do it. Others may have different approaches.

Re: what are these?

thanks woodonglass i like that idea. that way those are solid and the tabbing also has a solid and flat surface to adhere to
