What Battery size do I need for a 15HP Evinrude?

Quick question to the group. Does anyone know the appropriate battery to use for an older 15HP Evinrude electric start? Can an AGM battery be used? Can one from a personal watercraft be used?

get a good quality deep cycle starting battery and you will be ok

I wouldn't make any claims about this being "approved", but I use a regular group 26-5s car battery because it is small-sized, light weight and has plenty of punch. My motor has an alternator and the battery is used only for starting and running lights, so it doesn't get deep-cycled. Only problem I ever had was the day I took along a 12V cooler and it drained the battery. But you CAN start a CD ignition motor with a rope, believe it or not.

What do you think of a small PWC AGM battery? I won't be doing anything but starting the engine with it...

I used a $20 lawn tractor battery on my old Johnson 20 and it worked for a long time... You will need to charge it every so often though... and as it's not a deep cycle the life span will be shorter but they're so cheap it's easy to do and they're small... I use the same battery for my trolling motor and it works well... just charge it regularly... they last a lot longer than one would think... and if you add a small solar panel as I did last year for the same small battery for my bilge pump on my leaky 20' sailboat it worked great...

The type of battery AGM, dry-cell, wet-cell, etc. doesn't matter. The AGM's nice because you can mount it in any way shape or form you fancy without having to worry about leaking. As for the size, your 15hp motor is smaller in hp and lower in compression than most motorcycle engines so I would assume that you should be able to use a garden tractor or motorcycle battery for starting, they'd be the smallest and lightest.
