Bellows adhesive, 3M Weathersrtip adhesive, contact cement
Gets glued in place or is dislodged and water leaks in

^^^^Yes. Clean the bore well with acetone or mineral spirits before applying the cement to both the bore and the O ring. I goop up the rear face of the O ring, and the castle retaining nut on the front of the out drive with Merc's 2-4-C waterproof grease. But any will work. I believe this helps keep the O ring in place when you reinstall the out drive. Mine are always in place when I pull the drive for regular maintenance checks.

manual has you applying bellows adhesive not grease and it is glued in the bore not placed on the castle nut
You can use grease but it is not required. Having the drive up to the installation level will help you to just line it up and not have to raise it up.

So it sits in front of the bellows retaining ring and not on the drive itself? I've never put the adhesive on it and I guess why that's been my issue? I assume the castle you're referring to is the part where the ring fits directly above the u joints.

BTW my shift shaft seals failed after only a year and this happened. Replaced the shift shaft seals, lower shift cable and all gaskets will be replaced. Bellows is not leaking. Quite annoying

Yes, it is glued into the bell hsg, tight up against the bellows retaining ring. That slotted, "castle" ring is the retainer that holds the drive shaft assembly in place in the upper gear hsg. This slips inside the bell hsg. O ring, and the nose on the upper hsg compresses, and seals when the out drive is torqued up. If you don't glue the ring into place, that slotted ring can roll the O ring out of position.

I apply bellows adhesive, or contact cement to the bell hsg. bore and to the outside of the O ring, and let it cure tacky. Then I fold the O ring's top down and set the bottom in place, and unfold the rest into position. Then press outward around the O ring to get good adhesion.

The grease is my personal warm and fuzzy insurance. Not per manual.

thanks everyone. My exhaust is dumped straight out of the back with EMI and I never capped the drive side of the exhaust so it was being pressurized and is why the shift shaft seals failed prematurely. Gotta love the hindsight

Search for the thread on quicksilver power tune for bellows...sounds like avoid the mess of glue and adhesive without sacrificing the bellows slipping off. Came from Don.

Nope. Behind. Front of a boat is the front of the boat, regardless of where you're working or how you're looking at it.
