What Boat?

Hi all...

Just have a very basic question... I currently own a 16 foot aluminum that I use in the Manasquan river, saltwater fishing. It has a 40 HP Suzuki on it. I also have a perfectly running 50 HP Merc sitting in my shed. I'd also like to move up to a fiberglass fishing boat. What size center console or walk around could I use the 50 HP mercury outboard on? Even if it is just a 16 footer, thats cool too, since it will probably give me more usable room (walking, fishing etc)

Any suggestions?

Re: What Boat?

Ahoy, BMorris,

There are several CC models of the 16/17 Boston Whalers that are great fishing boats and perform well with 50 hp.

My first choice is the Montauk 17, made from 1973 to 2002. Mine is an '80.

In the bargain category, you might look for a Carolina Skiff 16'. Not in the quality range of the Whalers, but a sturdy and servicable boat.

Good luck. :)

Re: What Boat?

ok... I'm definitely looking in the bargain category (pregnant wife)... I can do most repairs/rework myself... just looking for something that floats, with more usable room than the Mirrocraft that we've got now. 17 foot sounds good if the Merc will safely push it. Now I just need to find a used hull and t-top in one of the boat yards near me...

I know this is a very broad question, but what should an older hull cost without a motor?
